Tornadoes are most prevalent in April through September. However, they can strike at any time during the year.
Before the season arrives: Find a suitable shelter area in your home or work area. This should be a center hallway or closet on the ground floor. Instruct family members on actions to be taken in case of your absence.
Make sure all family members know the name of the county where you are traveling, since tornado watches are issued by the county. Tinker is located in Oklahoma County.
For Indian Hills Inn guests in Temporary Lodging Facilities, personnel should take shelter in the bathroom.
For Indian Hills Inn Guests in VAQ and VOQ, Bldgs. 5915, 5604, 5605, 5606 seek shelter with an occupant on the ground floor inside the bathroom.
If a Tornado Warning has been issued, do not try to get into your car and drive away from the tornado. Take shelter immediately.
The local radio and television will issue tornado watches and tornado warnings as instructed by the weather service. Area radio and TV stations will keep you updated on weather conditions. Tornado warnings may also be announced by a 3 to 5 minute steady tone on the base siren.
TORNADO WATCH: Weather conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. Tornado activity may be expected.
TORNADO WARNING: A tornado has actually been sighted or detected by radar.
TORNADO WATCH: Secure any personal loose items stored outside the facility.
Have movements of children restricted to the immediate vicinity.
Monitor the local radio and television stations for official weather information if thunderstorm activity is observed.
TORNADO WARNING: STAY INSIDE YOUR BUILDING! The only exception to this is if you are in a mobile home or metal hangar. Injury or death may occur if you are caught in the open.
Monitor local radio and television stations. Confirmed sightings and movements will be broadcasted.
A steady 3 to 5 minute tone on the base siren indicates a tornado has been sighted and Tinker AFB appears to be in the path.
If either the base siren or a loud noise is heard, or if you sight a tornado, take cover in the central hallway, bathroom, closet, or storm shelter.
AVOID AREAS NEAR WINDOWS.
DO NOT REMAIN ON THE SECOND OR THIRD STORY OF ANY BUILDING.
LIE FLAT ON THE FLOOR UNDER SOME PROTECTIVE COVER.
DO NOT TRY TO OUT RUN A TORNADO IN YOUR VEHICLE.
